Abstract

Research involving humans must be scientifically and ethically sound. Ethics is an asset of upright moral standards governing our actions, rights, responsibilities and values. Applied ethics in medical profession is very special because of an unequal physician–patient relationship. No human research of any scientific merit can be permitted unless ethical concerns are resolved. Ethical dilemma continues to challenge and evolve as the scientific advancement with its complexities progresses. Moral codes or guidelines have been in force to ensure that ethical principles be followed in the letter and spirit. In spite of all such guidelines, the independent ethics committees are entrusted to uphold ethical standards by reviewing all such human research projects for approval. This writing is to sensitize researchers on the basic tenets of ethical evaluation from participants, researcher’s and ethics committee’s perspective.
